At the February meeting of the Music Group, Hilary chose “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” by Handel and then Pachelbel’s Canon. Dorothy’s choice was two waltzes by Chopin, the waltz in E flat major “Grande Valse Brilliante” and the Waltz in A flat major, both played by the pianist Avner Arad. Sylvia chose Brahms Intermezzo in E flat major and the Intermezzo in A flat minor played by Dieter Goldman piano. This was followed by Ann’s choice of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.5 “The Reformation” played by the Gewandhausorchester, Leipzig with Kurt Masur conductor, and Margaret’s choice of the Waltz and Polonaise from Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky ended the first half before refreshments.
The music then continued with Hilary’s choice of the Habanera from Carmen sung by Leontyne Price, and Dorothy’s choice the prelude to the Gadfly by Shostakovich played by Julian and Jiaxin Lloyd Webber on cellos. Sylvia then chose piano music by Franz Liszt, “Rustling in the Forest” and “Dance of the Gnomes”. Ann’s final choice was Schubert’s String Quartet, and the evening concluded with Margaret’s choice of a duet from “La Rondine” by Puccini sung by Kiri Te Kanawa and Placido Domingo.
