This month we read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Guy Montag is a fireman whose job it is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the source of all discord and unhappiness: the printed book.
Opinions were varied from enthusiasm and interest to some members finding it depressing, ‘not their thing’ and leaving it alone. Some agreed it was well written with excellent imagery – burning books fluttering like pigeons. Descriptions of the effect of the television walls, the noise of pointless chatter, the awareness of travelling in time with no depth of feeling or questioning. The book was written in the Fifties; a view of a possible future which showed what a fantastic ability Ray Bradbury has for projecting into the Future. He has given us a book that stimulates further questioning and observation on our own possible futures. Scores ranged from 4 to 9. Looking forward to our next meeting already because we are discussing a book of our choice. Great to see you ladies!
